Reviews:

Anyone who dismisses commercially successful techno artists like Moby or DirtyVegas as cynical simply for their willingness to license their music to whicheveradvertising agency offers the right price ought to take a look at the titleof the new Aphex Twin CD and swallow their sentiments. Not only is 26 Remixesfor Cash truth in advertising—Richard James, the Twin himself, haslong told interviewers that his primary interest in reworking other people'stracks was for the payday—it's just the latest of a series of exceptionallyexpedient maneuvers on James' part to keep the income rolling without actually, you know, making any new music. The rumor is that his lousy double-CD from lastyear, Druqks, was a desktop-cleaning exercise, a bunch of leftovers fromprevious albums he'd put out to sate his fawning cult. This time, he'sjust cleaning out his closet—and, one would imagine, filling his coffersas well.

Hardcore Aphex fans may gripe about gems gone missing, but 26 Remixesactually offers a pretty good array of what there is to admire about the guy:the gnarled musique-concrete tantrum of his reworking of Mescalinum United's"We Have Arrived," the lovely, contoured textures of Seefeel's"Time to Find Me (AFX Fast Mix)" and Gentle People's "Journey(Aphex Twin Care Mix)." Still, it could have been put together with morecare, starting with leaving out his unlistenable remix of David Bowie &Philip Glass' "Heroes Symphony." Then again, taking the bad withthe good is all part of being an Aphex Twin fan, right?

Unfortunately, it is.
