Description

Under the now familiar KH alias, Japanese musical polymath Katsunori Hiraiwa has rightly been celebrated for his inspired, sun-soaked blends of reggae, soul, city pop, disco and lovers rock. He's already notched up one 21st century Balearic anthem via HF International's sublime cover of Hall & Oates' classic 'I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)'- a hard-to-find 2018 single recently reissued by Ubiquity Records - and has now set his sights on further success via a typically colourful rework of Darondo's sweet, string-laden 1973 soul classic 'Didn't I'.Utilising his alternative KH & The LASTTRAK alias, Hiraiwa brilliantly re-imagines the heartfelt, soft-focus soul gem as a lightly spacey chunk of Balearic lovers rock brilliance, with Darondo's expressive, eyes-closed vocals, chiming lead lines and simmering strings wrapping around a warm and languid reggae groove. It's a startling, tactile and deliciously loved-up interpretation that treats the source material with due respect while taking it in a thrilling new direction. To compliment the full vocal A-side take, Hiraiwa has also included an instrumental mix. Here, the quality of the Japanese producer's instrumentation and arrangement can be heard in full - think deep, rolling bass, intergalactic synth chords, bubbly organ motifs, echoing drum fills, gentle music box style melodies, sensuous strings and select snippets of Darondo's swooning vocalisations. It's the perfect accompaniment to one of the strongest and most ear-catching remixes of 2026.
